A real bar serving award-winning, locally brewed real ales
At the Black Bull you will find our traditional bar, with exposed stone walls, oak beams, cosy open fire and comfortable chairs and tables. One half of the extensive bar features slate flooring – from the nearby slate mines, of course – and is particularly suitable for parties, having several large tables.
The jewel in the crown is the full selection of our cask real ales from Coniston Brewing Co, all of which are brewed on the premises and which have won numerous awards including the ‘Champion Beer of Great Britain’ in 1998 for our famous Bluebird Bitter and again in 2015 for No.9 Barley Wine.
In addition, the bar has an extensive selection of wines and spirits, including single malt whiskies and craft gins.
There is also ample seating outside with chairs, benches and tables with sun umbrellas for when the warmer weather is with us – perfect for relaxing and watching the world pass by!

We are open 7-days a week from 12 noon, serving food through until the evening.

Beers from Coniston Brewing Co
Hidden away, just behind the Black Bull Inn, is the Coniston Brewing Company, the multi award-winning brewery founded in 1995 and run by Ian Bradley, son of the owners of the Black Bull.
Ian studied and graduated in the art of brewing and from its modest start has become a micro brewery known nationally and around the world for its quality of beers.
Between six and ten beers are in regular production, with modest weekly production of around 1,600 gallons.
The Inn is effectively the Coniston Brewing Co ‘tap’ and these wonderful beers are available in pints, half pint and 1/3 pint tasting ‘flights’.
